Why are Simple Mills crackers a must-have item for your gluten free pantry? Because they’re delicious and free of ingredients many celiacs find problematic!
When I realized I couldn’t have corn anymore, I almost lost it. I love chips. Looove–like an unhealthy, co-dependent relationship. But I dutifully went on a corn-free, canola oil-free chip search because…what else could I do?? I had a sliver of hope that I could maybe find something palatable.
I tried a number of chips that claimed to be grain free, but canola oil is often cross contaminated with corn and a surprising number of chips have citric acid (usually derived from corn). So I’d be hopeful, and then get sick, be hopeful, and get sick.
Then I ate a lot of bacon. It’s cruchy and salty and kind of scratches the itch. And in all honestly, it was pretty delicious. But then I found Plant Snacks chips and Simple Mills crackers!
I think of Simple Mills as gluten free Wheat Thins. So if you miss Wheat Thins, you gotta check these babies out! They’re delicious with Miyoko’s vegan cheese wheels or Kite Hill Cream Cheese Style Spread.
SIMPLE MILLS ALMOND FLOUR CRACKERS – INGREDIENTS
If celiac disease has taught me one thing, it’s that processed foods have some pretty nasty ingredients! It’s surprisingly difficult to find clean, wholesome, processed food. But Simple Mills is a company that has truly built a relationship of trust with me.
Let’s take the sea salt crackers as an example. The ingredients are almonds, sunflower seeds, flax seeds, tapioca starch, cassava flour, organic sunflower oil, sea salt, organic onion, organic garlic, rosemary extract. That’s it!
Their crackers are certified gluten free, and on their website you can acess an allergen information chart that tells you what allergens are present in the same manufacturing facility, and what allergens are manufactured/processed on the same equipment! I’ve never seen a company that does that!
I do need to say that not all flavors are dairy free. The Farmhouse Cheddar and Smoky BBQ Cheddar contain cheese. They’re all non-GMO project verified, corn free, grain free, soy free, and free of gums/emulsifiers. Some flavors are also vegan and paleo-friendly.
SIMPLE MILLS ALMOND FLOUR CRACKERS – FLAVORS
I tried the Sea Salt, Rosemary and Sea Salt, Sun-Dried Tomato and Basil, and Cracked Black Pepper. The Sun-Dried Tomato and Basil was probably my favorite in terms of a stand alone cracker. It needs no accoutrement.
The Sea Salt is my go-to for crackers to eat with other stuff. It has a hint of sweetness from the nuts which I love, and it’s crispier than you’d expect from a nut-based product.
The Rosemary and Sea Salt is also delicious, but I only eat it with some things, since the rosemary flavor is robust. You want to make sure it goes with the flavor of the food you’re eating. They’re also good as a stand alone cracker.
The Cracked Black Pepper was my least favorite, but I’m not a big pepper person (say that 3 times fast: big pepper person, big pepper person, big pepper person). But if like black pepper, you’ll probably love these.
The flavor is fantastic, the texture is perfect, and the ingredients are healthy. I love these crackers! I’ve found them in a bunch of different grocery stores, but you can also get them on Amazon, so availability isn’t an issue. If you’re in the market for a tasty cracker, check these out, you won’t be sorry!
