Are Plant Snacks chips an appetizing replacement for corn chips? When I realized I was inadvertently ruining my health with corn, I went on a crusade for a chip replacement.
I tried a number of different options (like TERRA chips), but learned the hard way that most chips are fried in canola oil. And canola oil is typically very cross-contaminated with corn.
Trying to find a corn fee chip was hard! So I started searching for grain free chips and discovered Plant Snacks Chips. And yes, they are a great replacement for corn chips!
Their mission statement is fantastic:
“We created Plant Snacks to make better snacks than what is currently available in stores. We are tired of artificial flavors, cheap ingredients, and poor nutrition.”
Can I get an Amen?! They are also free of the big 8 allergens which are milk, fish, tree nuts, wheat, soy, peanuts, shellfish, and eggs. And the good news doesn’t stop there.
They are certified gluten free (woohoo!), corn free (Hallelujah!), vegan, non-GMO, and have no added sugar.
One of my biggest gripes about corn chips was that the yummy flavors all had dairy in them. It’s so fantastic to have chips in my diet that don’t make me sick!
PLANT SNACKS CHIPS FLAVORS
There are 4 flavors available: Sea Salt, Vegan Cheddar, Super Seed Mix, and Beet with Vegan Goat Cheese.
I’ve only tried 2 flavors because that’s what my local health food stores carry–sea salt and vegan cheddar.
Plant Snacks chips are made from a root vegetable called cassava. The root is peeled, dried, and ground into a flour.
If you’ve done much gluten free baking, you’re proably conversant with it as an alternative gluten free flour. It’s also poplular in the Paleo community since it’s a grain free flour.
Cassava has nutritional benefits that include vitamin C, magnesium, folate, and fiber.
The base for the chip is cassava root flour, sunflower oil, sesame seeds, sea salt, and rosemary extract. The different flavors have some additional ingredients, but you can see it has pretty wholesome ingredients.
The vegan cheddar is my fave!! At work I used to have a stash of “emergency Cheetos” that I would pull out when I needed some carbs and cheesy love to get me through a crappy day at work.
Of course Cheetos are made from corn and had to come off the menu. [insert a moment of silence for Cheetos here]
So it was a glorious day when I tried the vegan cheddar plant snacks chips and knew I had found my new emergency Cheetos!
These chips are deliciously cheesy!!! I don’t know how Plant Snacks works their dark magic, but it’s music to my tongue! (I know that makes no sense) When I eat these, I do a happy food dance every time.
I also buy the sea salt flavor to use with dips like guacamole, hummus, etc. As a stand alone chip, the flavor is a solid “meh.”
But I’m very grateful for a plain chip to pair with tasty dips! I don’t like using seasoned chips because they compete with the flavor of the dip.
Definitely give these chips a try! They have a store locater on their website, but you can also get them on Amazon. They’re now a staple in my pantry.
And my wonderful husband who has the honor (yes, that’s sarcasm) of eating gluten free because I’m a hot mess says, “They’re good! When I eat them I don’t feel like I’m in the penalty box.”
